I relied on post-production for a majority of the final product, which helped a lot with render times. Everything was composited in Nuke. The techniques I utilized included:
Render Layers

seperating the character from the background

blurring the background to create the illusion of depth
AOVs

RGBA, Specular, Diffuse, Transmission, all the good stuff...
Volumetric Rays

to create the illusion of atmosphere, without driving my computer insane by doing it in Maya
VFX
-
Dust particles, Smoke...
-
Additional light rays made by making brush stroke masks in Procreate
